English

At the Glapton Academy, English is more than just a subject — it’s a way to connect, grow, and shine. Through our high-quality English curriculum, we aim to nurture confident, creative learners who love language and literature.

Reading

The Glapton Academy English curriculum was developed in line with the National Curriculum for English (2014). In addition, we further developed our curriculum offer in line with guidance from the DfE Reading Framework (2023) and The Writing Framework (2025).

We read to the children on a daily basis, this text is selected from the Pi Corbett Reading Spine. Additionally, we teach three reading lessons a week with the following focuses: Fluency and Prosody, Skill and Comprehension. The texts used for these lessons are based on prior learning from the previous year to ensure the pupils learn and remember more.

Writing

At the Glapton Academy, English is more than just a subject — it’s a way to connect, grow, and shine. Through our high-quality English curriculum, we aim to nurture confident, creative learners who love language and literature.

We believe that every child matters, and we work hard to make sure everyone feels included and supported. Our lessons encourage friendship and collaboration, so children learn together and celebrate each other’s successes.

We set high expectations because we know our pupils have big aspirations. With the right motivation, they can achieve amazing things. Reading rich, exciting texts and exploring powerful stories helps them develop a lifelong love of learning.

By mastering speaking and writing skills, our children learn to express themselves clearly and confidently in every situation. We want them to leave us not only as skilled readers and writers but as thoughtful, ambitious individuals ready to make a difference.

Phonics

Essential Letters and Sounds

How is ELS taught in schools?

With ELS, there is a daily phonics lesson where the teacher teaches a new sound, or reviews sounds learned earlier in the week. This is shown to the class on the whiteboard.

Children learn the letters that represent the sounds. They are then asked to read words and sentences with the new sounds in. Children will also practise writing the letters that represent the sounds.
