Maths Vision
At Glapton Academy, we grow confident, resilient mathematicians who enjoy learning and achieve success together as part of our FAMILY. We believe maths should be purposeful, inclusive and inspiring for all.

Calculation Policy

At Glapton Academy, we follow the approaches to calculation set out by White Rose Education. Their calculation policy outlines the progression in written and mental methods for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division from Early Years to Year 6.

We place a strong emphasis on the use of representations to help children see the mathematics and develop a deep understanding of core concepts. Across all year groups, the bar model is used regularly to support reasoning and problem solving, helping pupils make connections between different areas of maths.

Mathematical talk allows children to articulate, explain and develop their thinking through discussion and shared thinking. At Glapton Academy, we encourage students to ‘speak like a mathematician’ – which is to use mathematical vocabulary accurately and precisely, as well as to speak in full sentences when giving an explanation or answer. This video aims to share with you some of the key vocabulary your children will use in their maths lessons.
